We are less than a week out so, YES, it IS Christmas movie-watching time, but if you’re starting to feel like the holiday spirit is haunting you on every channel you turn to, here are Matt’s weekly reviews of the TV shows, movies, and series you should and should not be watching right now!
Watch: ‘Don’t F*** With Cats’
I absolutely LOVE stumbling upon hidden gems on Netflix and this short docu-series is easily my favorite find of the week. This is a true crime story but it is so bizarre and weird as you follow a group of self-proclaimed ‘internet nerds’ and their quest to hunt down a serial killer. The internet is the wild west, but there is one net-zero-rule: Don’t f*** with cats.
Verdict: Must Watch! Watch this before you do anything else with your life!
Tough Watch: ‘Marriage Story’
This movie is done very well with strong performances by both Scarlett Johannson and Adam Driver, about a subject that is, sadly, all too real world. But, that is the problem – this story is TOO REAL. I watch a lot of movies that my wife says are sad and depressing, but this movie was too sad and depression even for ME! If you’ve been through a divorce, especially when kids are involved, this is an all-to relate-able tale of a marriage falling apart – not due to a lack of love, an affair, or other common cause, but rather because…well, I won’t spoil it for you.
Verdict: Watch it with a box of tissues handy, and be prepared to have your gut wrenched (you’ve been warned)
Inspiring Watch: ‘The Imagineering Story’
The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda may be grabbing all the headlines for Disney Plus, but that’s not the only original series worth watching on the new streaming platform. “The Imagineering Story” is a hidden gem that will leave you feeling inspired, uplifted, and as curious as when you were a kid. The Imagineers are the group of extremely talented creative individuals who are the core of everything Disney does, from inventing technologies to make the theme parks possible, to the infamous mechanical feats like Pirates of the Caribbean, this group has survived more than 60 years of Disney evolution to deliver ground-breaking innovation that has literally changed the world as we know it.
Verdict: Watch this and be inspired!
Sci-Fi Watch: ‘The Expanse’
Season 4 of “The Expanse” is out on Amazon Prime and it is my binge pick of the week. This show originally started out on The Sci-Fi Channel and was eventually picked up by Amazon Prime. It is well worth the space adventure to catch up on seasons 1-3 now because season 4 only gets better. The show takes place in a future where humans have colonized Mars and the outer belt-way, but the same struggles of the ‘Haves’ and ‘Have-Nots’ continue to plague our species even as we explore the galaxy in cool spaceships.
Verdict: Watch. Watch. Watch.
Dumb Watch: ‘6 Underground’
At first, I was intrigued by this movie because it stars Ryan Reynolds, who is on fire right now, but then I saw that explosion-addict Michael Bay was directing and I wasn’t sure whether to watch it or not. Turns out, I shouldn’t have. It’s a graphic, explosion-filled, bloodied, and (frankly) a gross thriller that loses its thrill when it fails to tell a compelling story. I lost interest in Michael Bay years ago when the charm of his dolly shots, dramatic low-angle pans, and over-use of explosions wore off, yet I held out hope that this would be like Fast and the Furious…but with Ryan Reynolds…That sounds awesome, and it probably would have been amazing, IF that is what they had delivered…but, unfortunately, it wasn’t. the movie was rushed and made little sense as priority was placed on the special effects over compelling characters and story-lines. Plus, seeing so many bodies visably crushed, smooshed, and ripped apart on camera is just…stupid.
Verdict: Don’t Watch It…Just…Don’t. Note: If you DO want a bad knock off of Fast and Furious, just watch any of the Fast and Furious sequels instead!
