Got a room that’s a little “meh” or not quite what you want it to be? Have any idea what to do?

Design genius Michael Murphy from Lee Douglas Interiors joins Nikki & Laura in studio every Wednesday at 8am to answer your design questions.

Holly submitted her living/dining/kitchen situation for Michael’s expert advice.

Holly’s Sitch:
“I’ve recently painted walls grey, replaced the floors, and upgraded a few lighting fixtures.
I’m trying to figure out a rug and coffee table/end tables. How do I size a rug? What type of wall decor do you suggest? What’s another option for the kennels? Should I put them in another space or design around them?
How should I display my pictures so my entertainment center can be cleaned off?
I tore out the island in my kitchen, and am not sure if I’ll replace it.”

Michael’s Suggestions:

You are off to a great start. The walls color looks good.

  • A good tip when selecting area rugs is to maintain about a foot around the perimeter of the room to allow space to see the floor, but large enough to anchor the furniture. Area rugs are great was to define spaces too. So, keeping the rug under the sectional will allow it to be a lounge area/TV viewing area.
  • You have already started introducing some round shapes in the space with the pendant light. While linear lines are very modern, they can create a very hard edge feeling in the space. To help soften the lines consider introducing stacked round coffee tables.
  • For the kennels consider a “built-in” style pet crate with a hard surface top. This will make it look more furniture versus a hard metal cage.
  • Wall art should reflect you and your family’s style, personality, ambitions, dreams…choose pieces that reflect these elements.
  • If you are missing the kitchen island consider a portable style that you can move out of the way when not in use and wheel it into place when family and friends want to help cook.
