Ex-Billy Joel drummer tells all in new book 'Liberty: Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness'

Ex-Billy Joel drummer tells all in new book 'Liberty: Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness'

Leland BobbeIt's unlikely that Billy Joel fans will ever get a tell-all book from the Piano Man, but now we've got the next best thing: a tell-all book from his longtime drummer, Liberty DeVitto.

Liberty: Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness features juicy stories about sex, drugs and rock 'n roll, and life in the recording studio and on the road with Billy. But it's also the story of DeVitto's fascinating family, his childhood, and the inner workings of the music business.

"It's about, 'Hey, look, I'm the guy who never took drum lessons and I play on one of the top five albums that's ever been recorded," says Liberty.  "I'm a guy that barely made it out of high school, and now I wrote a book! So it's like, 'You can do it!'"

DeVitto and Billy recently rekindled their friendship after a long feud, which is why he says he's releasing the book now, though he's worked on it for more than 15 years.

"I'm not angry [any more]," he admits. "I had to give up the anger because it was eating me up inside."

Billy pronounced the book "really good," and also wrote the foreword, in which he gushes that Liberty "provided the power that drove our song arrangements and live performances" and "propelled my music into another dimension."  The drummer admits he cried when he read that.

"I've never been acknowledged as that guy that helped him so much," he admits. "It kind of verified who I was...because a lot of people are always like, 'Did you make up those drum parts or did Billy tell you what to do?'...And so now it's like, everybody knows."

"[F]or me, it's a great, great thing," says Liberty.  "I got my friend back."

Shawn Mendes partners with Global Citizen Year for $250,000 scholarship fund

Shawn Mendes partners with Global Citizen Year for $250,000 scholarship fund

ABC/Image Group LAShawn Mendes isn't allowing a global pandemic prevent his charitable arm, the Shawn Mendes Foundation, from helping global youth discover their voice.

It was announced on Tuesday that the 21-year-old teamed up with Global Citizen Year to launch a pioneering program aimed specifically at teaching leadership skills to high school graduates worldwide.

Called the Global Citizen Academy, grads across the globe will be granted access to the Minerva Project -- a virtual platform specializing in educational and innovative programs.

In addition, the Academy will offer virtual lesson plans aimed at bolstering future leaders to help them build "powerful and practical skills for a lifetime of social impact."  The course, which includes lectures from global leaders, runs from early September to mid-December.

Overall, the key function of the Academy is to foster collaboration and boost one's worldly knowledge by teaching skills that are not typically accessible "in a traditional classroom."

The deadline to apply is July 30.

In partnership with the program, the "Stitches" singer launched the Shawn Mendes Foundation Scholarship, which will offer up to $250,000 in grants to allow those who would otherwise find the tuition cost-prohibitive.

"Our world needs young leaders now more than ever," The Grammy nominee said in a press release. "By working with Global Citizen Academy, my hope is that we can empower many more young people around the world with the resources and tools they need to make an impact."

Global Citizen Academy's mission aligns perfectly with Mendes' foundation, which he launched in 2019, in that it "seeks to inspire Shawn’s audience, the youth generation of today—to learn about those causes that they are passionate about, and help empower them to use the voice they have to bring change to the world by taking action & giving back."

Katy Perry declares she's "not afraid" of childbirth: "I know the whole process"

ABCMost first-time mothers are a little trepidatious about the prospect of giving birth -- but not Katy Perry. Appearing on the U.K.'s The One Show earlier this week, the pregnant singer said she's pretty much seen it all.

"I am ready. I am not afraid," Katy told the show's hosts. "I've helped deliver my sister's two babies in her living room that are now three and six. And so I know the whole process."

She then went on to say that her sister's births took place "in a tub" and "on her bed," while Katy was "holding her leg back [and] filming it like Scorsese"  -- which prompted the show's male host to stop her, pleading, "Enough detail on that one!"

But in addition to waiting for the arrival of the daughter she's nicknamed "Kicky Perry," the singer is also looking forward to the release of her long-awaited fifth album.

"You know, I'm just excited for Smile to come out August 14th...'cause it's a record that is full of hopefulness and resilience and joy," she noted. "And hopefully, you know, people will tune into that, if they want that or need that."

Right now, *this* artist is the world's biggest pop star

Right now, *this* artist is the world's biggest pop star

Norbert SchoernerIf you're a fan of a particular artist, you'll probably tell anyone who'll listen why they're the biggest star in the world -- or at least why they deserve to be.  But Bloomberg has come up with a formula that ranks the world's biggest artists, and right now, the person on the top of its chart is Lady Gaga.

Bloomberg's Pop Star Power Rankings currently has Gaga as the world's biggest pop star, thanks to her new album, Chromatica, which was the biggest-selling album in the U.S. this past month.  She was also the most listened-to artist in June on Spotify.

Other data that the ranking takes into account include Instagram interactions and concert ticket sales -- but of course, nobody's got anything to put in the latter column due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most of the artists who currently rank below Lady Gaga on Bloomberg's chart are rappers, due to the genre's huge success on the album and streaming charts in the last few months.  Others include Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Post Malone, Lewis Capaldi and The Weeknd.  Number two, though, is Latin music superstar Bad Bunny.

Pentatonix takes on Dua Lipa in latest 'At Home' video

Courtesy PentatonixPentatonix has released the latest video in their series of clips for all the songs on their latest EP, At Home.

This time, it's their take on Dua Lipa's song "Break My Heart."  The track, from Dua's hit album, Future Nostalgia, interpolates the melody of the 1987 #1 hit "Need You Tonight" by the Australia band INXS.

The acapella group also sings a bit of "Break My Heart" in one of the other tracks on the EP: the quarantine-inspired "Home" medley, which strings together more than a dozen songs that mention either "home" or "house."

Penatonix has already released videos for the "Home" medley, plus their versions of The Weeknd's hit "Blinding Lights" and "when the party's over," by Billie Eilish

The two other songs on the EP are a cover of "Dreams" by The Cranberries, and a song by the British group Clean Bandit, called "Cologne."

#MC30: Mariah Carey has surprises for fans, starting this Friday

Columbia RecordsBack in June, Mariah Carey told fans that she was postponing the celebration of the 30th anniversary of her debut album due to the fight for social justice and Black Lives Matter. But now, it seems she's ready to party.

On her socials, Mariah's posted a video montage of images and videos from her the era of her debut album, which arrived June 12, 1990 and went on to sell more than 15 million copies worldwide. "MC30 Every Friday," she captioned the image.

Since Mariah's original postponement message mentioned "surprises and rarities" that she'd hoped to share with fans, it stand to reason that she's going to roll some of those goodies out starting this Friday.

Mariah's debut album produced a string of hits, including "Vision of Love," "Someday," "I Don't Wanna Cry" and "Love Takes Time," and inspired several generations of future female pop stars.

The diva is also prepping the release of her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, due out September 29.

Dua Lipa talks long journey from Kosovo to the top:

Dua Lipa talks long journey from Kosovo to the top: "I was stuck in limbo"

ABC/Image Group LAIf "Don't Start Now" is your first introduction to Dua Lipa, you should know she's got a very interesting backstory.

She was born in London in 1995 to Albanian parents who'd escaped Kosovo, which was formerly part of Yugoslavia. In 2006, she and her parents moved back to Kosovo. That's where Dua decided that she wanted to be a performer, but she soon realized she'd have to leave the country in order to make her dreams of being a global superstar come true.

“I loved performing, and I really rediscovered how much I love performing in front of people when I was in Kosovo and I'd get up in school concerts and I would sing and I just loved being in the limelight,” she tells ABC Audio. “I didn't feel like I wanted to do music in Kosovo because it's just like if you do music there, it's very small...I felt the only way I could [get discovered] was to go back to London.”

Dua returned to London at age 15 to stay with a family friend, but the transition wasn’t easy at first. She says being mostly on her own pushed her to grow up before her time “a tiny bit.”

“I was always feeling like I was stuck in limbo,” she says. “It was always, you know, going out and meeting people and getting demos, but then still having like this folder on my laptop with a few songs, neither of which sounded the same because I was still trying to figure out my sound.”

She kept hustling and eventually, three years after moving back to London, she found her manager through Twitter. The rest is pop music history.

Dua’s sophomore album, Future Nostalgia, is out now.

Katy Perry clowns around in "Smile" performance video

Capitol RecordsKaty Perry is finding new ways to put a smile on your face. The singer has released a joyous “performance video” for her new song, “Smile.”

In keeping with the clown theme she introduced with her album’s cover art last week, the clip features Katy giving her modern maternity spin on the clown suit.

Clad in a colorful polka dot outfit with red hearts painted around her eyes, she sings and dances around oversized objects -- including, at one point, her own giant smiling face.

“Smile” is the title track for Katy’s upcoming fifth studio album, set to be released August 14. The album also features her previous single, “Daises,” as well as “Never Really Over” and “Harleys in Hawaii.”

Maroon 5 bassist taking a "leave of absence" from band after domestic violence charge

Christopher Polk/Getty ImagesMaroon 5 bassist Michael "Mickey" Madden is taking a leave of absence from the band, two weeks after he was arrested for an alleged domestic violence incident, People reports.

"I have some things that I need to deal with and address right now and so I have decided to take a leave of absence from Maroon 5 for the foreseeable future," Madden says in a statement to People. "During this time, I do not want to be a distraction to my bandmates. I wish them the absolute best."

Madden was arrested in L.A. late last month and charged with intimate partner violence. He was released the same day after posting $50,000 bail. The details surrounding the incident are unclear and the victim has not been identified.

A spokesperson for Maroon 5 told People in a statement at the time, "We are deeply devastated by this disappointing news. As we learn more, we are looking at this very seriously. For now, we are allowing all of the individuals involved the space to work things through."

Madden was previously arrested in 2016 in a cocaine bust involving Ivanka Trump’s ex-boyfriend, James “Bingo” Gubelmann.

On Monday, Maroon 5 announced rescheduled tour dates for 2021.

Melissa Etheridge talks son's OD death and what she's doing to honor him

Melissa Etheridge talks son's OD death and what she's doing to honor him

Paul Morigi/Getty Images for National GeographicFor the first time since her son's tragic death, Melissa Etheridge is ready to open up about what she's been through, and how she's been coping.

"Time does heal. It's only been a couple of months, but I've been very busy and made myself very busy," Etheridge told ABC's Good Morning America on Tuesday. "You go one day at a time -- you get through the grief and you get to the healing."

It's been two months since the singer shared on Twitter that her 21-year-old son, Beckett, died from opioid addiction.

"As a parent, you know your children have their own lives and make their own choices -- but you just can't help to feel responsible, of course, for them," Etheridge told GMA's Robin Roberts.

Etheridge shared that Beckett, who's one of two children Etheridge had with former partner Julie Cypher, was first introduced to painkillers after he broke his ankle during a snowboarding incident. That led to a downward spiral.

"I tried to help… you do everything you can because you're a parent," Etheridge said. "He made these choices and he was a young adult. I couldn't save him -- only he could save him."

Now, to honor her son's life, the singer-songwriter is moving forward by bringing awareness to the dangers of drug addiction and helping fund research programs through the Etheridge Foundation.

Melissa's also been using music to help her heal. She launched "Etheridge TV," which features live concerts and "chat shows" delivered from her makeshift garage studio.

"It's a way to connect to people. It's, of course, healing for me -- but mostly to connect with my fans," she said. "...There are people who are still suffering and I want to give them relief in this crazy world that we are in right now."

John Legend opens up about his history of cheating and how he changed for wife Chrissy Teigen

John Legend opens up about his history of cheating and how he changed for wife Chrissy Teigen

Yu TsaiBefore John Legend sang "All of Me" to longtime love Chrissy Teigen, the Oscar winner admits that he was anything but faithful when he was younger.

Speaking to Dax Shepard and Minica Padman Monday for their podcast Armchair Expert, Legend touched upon his history of infidelity before he met Teigen.

"I did have a history of [cheating]. Definitely in my 20's," the 41-year-old confessed when asked upfront about how he treated his past girlfriends. "I was younger than everybody in high school and college, and so I just didn't get a lot of girls. When I started to get that attention, I loved it."

"I definitely was dishonest and selfish," Legend openly admitted.

He said he fooled himself into thinking he wasn't doing anything wrong by "keeping my relationship ill-defined."  However, even he knew the truth back then that "it was really cheating."

Going back to not receiving much attention from the opposite sex when he was younger, he said he overindulged when he started becoming famous, admitting he "took advantage of that, at that time."

But that all stopped once he met Chrissy, whom he married in 2013.  The two share two children, four-year-old Luna and two-year-old Miles.

He says he is thankful he changed his ways for her.

"At a certain point, you just realize you're happier being honest. You're happier being faithful and being in love with one person," Legend explained. "At a certain point, I just decided that person was Chrissy. I decided I wasn't gonna mess with somebody else anymore."

Legend joked that he is deathly afraid of doing his wife wrong, cracking, "Chrissy has 12 million Twitter followers. If I were to do anything, it would be career suicide."

The Spice Girls reunite as COVID-19 lockdowns loosen

MJ Kim/Spice Girls LLP via Getty ImagesThe Spice Girls have reunited, though it's not exactly in the way fans would have hoped.

Emma Bunton, who is one fifth of the girl group that includes Geri Horner, Mel B, Mel C, and Victoria Beckham, revealed during her radio show on Sunday that the ladies were recently able to catch up with each other in-person.

According to Mirror Online, Bunton said, "As things slowly, slowly start to get back to normal and we've all started to meet up with friends again haven't we? Which is strange... I actually started to think I would never see them again. Well, unless it was on Zoom calls."

"And this week, yes, I finally got to meet up with Geri, Mel B, Mel C and Victoria. Now you may think we propped up a bar somewhere or had drinks in the garden but no! We went on a social distancing walk in the woods, yes," the 44-year-old singer shared.

As for whether the Spice Girls will get back together for fans to witness, that remains to be seen, though reports thus far have maintained that Victoria will not be a part of any upcoming reunion tour.

Maroon 5 video director teases band's

Maroon 5 video director teases band's "fantastic" new music: "There is a magic they seem to have"

Don Arnold/WireImageWedding Crashers director David Dobkin is a good pal of Maroon 5's Adam Levine, and he's directed videos for the band like "Sugar," the super-successful "Girls Like You" and their current clip, "Memories."  Dobkin tells ABC Audio that Adam gave him a preview of the band's new music, and he was very impressed.

"The music's fantastic. You know, I don't know how they keep generating these hits," Dobkin gushes. "There is a magic that they seem to have. They have the ear for finding singles, writing singles...that's actually the talent. It's almost like Michael Jackson!"

Dobkin says Adam played him a couple of the new songs at his house.  "They're really, really good," Dobkin says -- so good that he couldn't even tell which one should be released first.

While we're waiting to hear this fantastic music, we'll just have to be content with watching the "Memories" video.  Dobkin says he was busy prepping a big movie in London last year when Adam begged him to direct the clip, and ended up with more than he bargained for.

"He was like, 'I'm going to be in London. Can I get you just...on the weekend for a day?,'" Dobkin recalls. "I'm like, 'OK, all right.' Then he canceled London, but now I'm on the hook for the video!"

So, Dobkin says, he ended up doing it remotely -- many months before we all made Zoom a permanent part of our lives.

"I directed the 'Memories' video from London with my director of photography in L.A....it was ridiculous! And it worked," Dobkin boasts. "I directed that video from 7,000 miles away! It's a one-take. But it was beautiful and it was emotional and it worked."

Katy Perry reveals the clever nickname she's given her unborn daughter

Katy Perry reveals the clever nickname she's given her unborn daughter

ABC/Stewart CookThe countdown is on for Katy Perry, who is due to give birth later this summer.  Like most expecting mothers approaching the tail end of the third trimester, she's feeling all her baby's movements.

Speaking to Britain’s Hits Radio Breakfast, the "Daisies" singer provided insight over how active her little one is.

"I call her Kicky Perry," the 35-year-old laughed. "I love a pun."

However, Perry's not letting a few kicks to the ribcage slow her down. "I'm really active right now and, you know, my doctors are like 'Stay active, you're good.  You're good to go, girl!,'" said the American Idol judge.  "So I've been dancing, I've been singing a lot."

As to why Perry isn't feeling the conventional nervousness most first-time mothers experience, it's because her fiancé Orlando Bloom already knows the ropes and is a natural at parenting.

"The good thing is that [Orlando] has a kid that's nine. And he's been through it so, when we were going to pick out strollers, he was like, he knew exactly the stroller," She disclosed, adding that she was definitely attracted to those that looked more entertaining.

"Some of the strollers are very chic, they've got leather handles and blah, blah, blah," She confessed. "I was like really drawn to them right? And he's like 'No, let me show you what the stroller is. It's this one that you pick up in the middle and it collapses -- a little thing -- and it's like an umbrella!'"

"He's already had a test run so, I'm grateful for that," Perry smiled -- cheekily adding that she found it very sexy watching Bloom demonstrate how to master the stroller.

Bloom is the father of nine-year-old Flynn, whom he shares with ex-wife Miranda Kerr.
